At Sivan Arul Boys’ Home, we believe that small acts of care can shape big values. Recently, our boys took part in a Cleaning and Gardening Day, turning their attention to the spaces they live and grow in. It was a simple but meaningful initiative that taught more than just how to tidy up or plant a seed.
Learning Through Action
Armed with brooms, buckets, and garden tools, the boys came together to clean their surroundings, organize common areas, and tend the garden. They worked in teams, showing cooperation, responsibility, and pride in their environment.
It wasn’t just about keeping the place clean. It was about learning respect, for the space they call home and for one another. By planting and maintaining the garden, they also gained a deeper understanding of sustainability and how food and nature connect to their daily lives.
Creating Ownership and Pride
These moments are important because they give the children a sense of ownership. They aren’t just residents of the Illam, they are caretakers of it. When they see the results of their hard work, a neat corridor, a fresh garden bed they feel proud, knowing they played a part in keeping their home beautiful and welcoming.
Looking Ahead
We hope to make Cleaning and Gardening Day a regular part of life at the Boys’ Home. It’s a simple practice that builds habits of cleanliness, self-respect, and shared responsibility,m values that stay with them well beyond their time at Sivan Arul.
